ERATH COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The Erath County Courthouse is a substantial three story edifice constructed of local white limestone and red Pecos sandstone. The tower of the building extends to a height of 95 feet, and the building's base measures 60 by 80 feet. This building presents a variation on a traditional theme in early Texas courthouses of intersecting halls on the first floor dividing the first floor space into four major areas. The twist is that the tower walls extend down through the center of the building creating an open central space on the first floor. This central space or atrium has no immediate ceiling and is open to the second and third floors. Iron staircases on the east and west sides of the building provide access to the upper levels. The district courtroom occupies the south side of the building on the second and third floors. This courtroom features a high ceiling that arches above to the third story balcony.

Memoirs of Maggie Brothers Dunn

Memoirs of Maggie Brothers Dunn: "I came to Wichita Falls in 1881. My father had been here awhile before Mother and I cameo He had lived at Stephenville, Texas, and he taught school there about two years. He came to Texas when he was discharged from the Confederate Army. Then he decided to go to Colorado on account of his health, and he had a chance to go with a bunch of cowboys driving cattle to Colorado to feed. He stayed there a while, then went back to Tennessee and taught school there, and thats when he met my Mother. At that time, teachers received 'salary and keep'. He stayed part of the time at my Mothers home, and different other homes, including that of my stepmother."

James served the Confederacy as a soldier in Co. I, 4th Alabama Cavalry. Official records say he enlisted at Guntersville, Alabama on August 1 1862, and is shown present for duty on a roll dated February 13, 1864. His wife's name was Sarah Frances Walker, and they were married on October 17, 1866 in Marshall Co., Alabama. She was born January 26, 1846 in Marshall County, and died January 24, 1937. The widow was pensioned and in 1921 said she had lived near Arlington for 48 years, thus they must have come here about 1873. The widow died in Dublin, Erath County, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. R. Wood. James M. French died September 12, 1918. Mr. and Mrs. French lie buried near several of their family members in Bedford Cemetery. They had at least eight children, including Delia F. French, William Bell French, Bettie Elizabeth French, James Henry French, Marquett Ann French, Nettie French, William Hugh French, and Maud French. A newspaper obituary for Mrs. French has survived among the papers of her descendants: Last Rites Held At Bedford for Mrs. Sarah Frances French. Mrs. Sarah Frances French, known among her many friends here as grandmother French, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. R. Ward, Dublin, Route ?, at 7:00 Sunday morning. Her death followed a brief illness which put her to bed for four days preceding her death. This illness which at first was not thought to be serious developed into pneumonia. Mrs. French, had she lived until Jan. 26, 1937, would have been 91 years of age. Preparations had been made to have a family reunion and an afternoon reception in her honor. She was born in Marshall county, Alabama on January 26, 1846. In 1866 s"

The Austin Chronicle: Columns: Daytrips: "Of course, Texans have their fun-loving side, too. On the Henderson County Courthouse lawn in Athens is a statue commemorating the local fiddlers' contest held on the last Friday of May since 1921. Stephenville has a black-and-white cow proclaiming Erath County the dairy capital of Texas. Famous for its dinosaur tracks, there are imprints of footprints incorporated in a gazebo outside of the Somerville County Courthouse in Glen Rose. The last white buffalo in Texas was killed north of Snyder, and they memorialized the event with a statue at the Scurry County Courthouse. In Floresville they have a giant peanut and in Seguin they have a giant pecan. No monument is stranger than the courthouse cornerstone in Eastland that once held Old Rip, the horned toad whose mummified body can be seen through the courthouse window.

Image Title: Dead Coyote on Fencepost
Category: Environmental Issues

Technical Details: Canon EOS 1v, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 lens, Kodak 100VS film, 1/125 second at f/16, with fill flash used on the coyote
Location: Highway near Stephenville, Texas
Description: While traveling along a Texas back road, I saw this dead coyote hanging from a fencepost, its feet bound by a leg snare. I understand that some ranchers believe that hanging the dead coyote in plain sight sends a message to other coyotes to stay away. I doubt that it works, but I do believe it sends a message. To me, the coyote has a messianic quality, crucified for alleged "sins" against man but perhaps representing our greater sins against nature itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I strive for images that are simple, graphic, evocative, and surreal. I believe you should judge images with your heart; technique is just a tool, not the ultimate goal. I find myself repeatedly drawn to nature and wildlife and the impact of man on both.

My images have been displayed at various galleries and museums and in various publications such as PhotoMedia, Professional Photographer, Outdoor Photographer, The New York Times, and Audubon Nature Calendars. With a partner, I have finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the Valley Land Fund Wildlife Photo Contest (www.valleylandfund.com). On my own, I won the 2001 Coastal Bend Wildlife Photography contest (www.wildlifephotocontest.com). A 2001 issue of Professional Photographer magazine featured me as their monthly cover artist. At the 2001 Fotofusion Photography Festival, I was chosen by Art Wolfe to receive the festival's Rising Star Photographer Award. You can see more of my images on my web site.
